Rate My Toenails

Every other trait we measure is mostly inherited. Arch height, toe length ratio and width profile are structural and fixed in adulthood. Nail and skin condition is the exception: it is almost entirely maintenance, which makes it the fastest score to move and the one most worth measuring on its own.

That is what this page reports. You still receive the full breakdown and overall rating, but the headline number is the condition sub-score — nail shape and length, surface quality, cuticle tidiness and the state of the skin immediately around each nail.

Four problems account for most low condition scores, and all four are fixable within a week.

Toenails should be cut straight across with only the sharpest corners gently smoothed, and left level with or barely shorter than the toe tip. Rounding the corners down into the nail groove is the single most common cause of ingrown nails, and it also reads worse visually because it narrows the nail plate and exposes more skin.

Very short nails score poorly for the same reason: they expose the nail bed and make the toe look blunt. Aim for the nail to end level with the flesh of the toe, not behind it.
